Many small islands are found south of Umboi Island (east of the main-land of Papua New Guinea); some of them are uninhabited, with some reports of large flying creatures.

Jonathan Whitcomb, from Long Beach, California, explored part of Umboi Island, in 2004, interviewing many native eyewitnesses of the ropen. He later wrote a book about his experiences and those of his associates in cryptozoology.

The American cryptozoologist Paul Nation, in 2002, crossing a small river on Umboi Island, during their search for the elusive ropen.

In 2006, he explored a remote area of the mainland and videotaped two indava lights that were on a ridge.

Garth Guessman, of California, has explored two island in Papua New Guinea: Umboi and New Britain. He still hopes to get a clear view of a living pterosaur and take a video or photograph of one of them.
